Smile Whitening

Smile Whitening

Tooth whitening (sometimes called “bleaching”) is a simple, non-invasive dental treatment used to change the color of natural tooth enamel and is an ideal way to enhance the beauty of your smile.

Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of most patients, there are a number of ways to whiten teeth. Dr. Madderra or our dental assistant can review with you all the options appropriate for your dental health and goals.

Since tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and other dental treatments prior to starting a whitening procedure.

Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the newly whitened teeth.

Reasons for smile whitening:

  • Fluorosis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development leaving teeth with uneven coloring)
  • Normal wear of outer tooth layer
  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.)
  • Yellow, brown stained teeth

Whitening at home:

Another option is to whiten and brighten your smile at home. This type of tooth whitening usually requires two visits. At the first appointment, impressions (molds) will be made of your teeth to create customized, clear plastic trays. Alternatively, you can use our Invisalign trays to whiten while straightening too!

At your second appointment, you will try on the trays for proper fit, and adjustments will be made if necessary. The trays are worn with our prescription-strength whitening solution either once or twice a day for only 3 minutes up to three times during a week depending on the degree of staining and desired level of whitening. We recommend whitening with the trays for approximately 4 weeks in a row to receive the same results as we can achieve in our in office One-Hour whitening treatment.

Tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up maybe needed every several years, or more often if you smoke, drink coffee, tea, or wine. You will receive care instructions for your teeth, and be encouraged to visit keep up with your regular visits to our office to help maintain your beautiful, healthy, white smile.
